Friends from the Field Webinar: A Field Guide to the Seaweeds of Maine

April 27, 2023 @ 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm

Join Blue Hill Heritage Trust and Island Heritage Trust for a Friends from the Field Webinar!
Glen Mittelhauser (director of Maine Natural History Observatory), Jordan Chalfant (MNHO board member), and Dr. Amanda Savoie (researcher at the Canadian Museum of Nature) are writing a user-friendly photographic field guide to the seaweeds of Maine. The project has several components: creating a database of thousands of historic records of seaweed observations in an effort to create a complete species list for the state of Maine; doing field work to update inventories, collect morphometric data, and take thousands of photographs; and lab work for microscopy images and DNA sampling.
Jordan Chalfant is a naturalist who lives in Bar Harbor and studies seaweed. After spending 10 years working as a field biologist, doing botanical inventories and seabird monitoring on the Coast of Maine, she has taken on managing The Naturalist’s Notebook, a nature and science bookstore in Seal Harbor, as her day job.
