SUMMARY:Digital Panel Discussion: West Coast Kelp Watchers
DESCRIPTION:What do the west coast Kelp watchers see off their shore? This digital panel features longtime wild harvesters and conservation-minded aquaculturists speaking from their own experience observing Pacific species\, particularly in the last years impacted by ocean heating events that have caused cascading impacts in the coastal kelp forests. Each will talk about her own lifeworld in seaweed\, observations about changes in the ocean\, reflections on the territoriality\, customary practices\, and regulatory structures that inform their harvest. They will bring up some of the misconceptions and 101 thinking that they bring to their work as educators and naturalists\, “docents to the wild world of seaweed” as well as some points that are relevant for those who wish to see more careful state regulation\, and where/ how to approach a life in seaweed learning. \nPanelists: \nAmanda Swinimer of Dakini Tidal Wilds has been harvesting seaweed in British Columbia for more than 20 years\, trained as a marine biologist\, she is the author of The Science and Spirit of Seaweed and The Science and Superpowers of Seaweed: A Guide for Kids. She is a primary author of Seaweed Commons white paper and a longtime participant in Slow Fish International. \nJulie Drucker (Yemaya Seaweed) has been wild harvesting along the Northern California for the past 20 years. \nVisit the event page for the link to connect to the virtual event!

SUMMARY:Seaweed Week Guided ID Walk 1
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a guided Seaweed ID walk at low tide\, led by Jaclyn Robidoux\, seaweed specialist with Maine Sea Grant and UMaine Cooperative Extension. \nWe’ll explore the shore near Two Lights State Park\, learning to identify native edible seaweeds and diving into their ecological roles\, seasonal rhythms\, environmental benefits\, and at-home uses. We’ll also talk about Maine’s growing seaweed farming industry\, sustainable harvest practices\, and the big role this unique marine resource plays in the state’s coastal economy. \nWe’ll bring the field guides\, seaweed samples\, and snacks to take home—just bring your outdoor gear and questions! \nRegistration: $20. Children 10 and under are free—please note if they’ll be joining when you sign up so we can bring enough supplies. Space is limited. Registration coming soon. \n\n  \nWHEN: Sunday\, April 26th. 1:30 – 3:00 PM \nWHERE: This workshop is being held at Dyer Cove in Cape Elizabeth\, near Two Lights State Park. Parking is available in the lot next to Dyer Cove\, adjacent to the lot for The Lobster Shack at Two Lights. To map to Dyer Cove\, use the address: 225 Two Lights Road\, Cape Elizabeth\, ME 04107. We’ll meet out on Dyer Cove beach at the Seaweed Week table. \nWEATHER NOTE: This workshop may require navigating some slick and/or rocky terrain. Attendees should have proper footwear (rubber boots/shoes with good traction that may get wet) and dress accordingly for a few hours in the Maine outdoors\, especially as it can be colder and more windy on the ocean. We’ll host this workshop in a variety of Maine’s spring weather conditions\, but will notify participants if we need to cancel or reschedule in the case of extreme weather. Thanks for understanding!
