DESCRIPTION:April 20-21:\nJoin the Smithereen Farm team for early-morning harvest and drying of native seaweeds! Bring a wetsuit if you have one. Low tide is around 6:15-6:30am\, so early birds are a must if you want to join in. No charge for these two days. People from away are welcome to book a campsite on HipCamp to be close to the action. \nApril 22nd:\nHarvest overview and guidance by longtime time harvester Kacie Loparto. Join in the water for harvest and drying of wild kelp. RSVP required! \nKanae Tokunaga\, a Japanese researcher of artisanal kelp traditions and economies will present about the high value products and supply chains in different regions of Japan. You can row or be a passenger (please note on booking form). An extra special guest will be on board\, Kim Grindle of Isleboro Oyster\, an aquaculturist who grows oysters\, kelp and sea urchin. This row happens at the end of the day\, rowing into the beautiful Maine sunset. \nIn this immersive sensory experience\, you’ll get to see\, touch and taste several varieties of seaweed\, including scoping out a local kelp farm in Belfast Bay. Maine seaweed tea will be served to round out your palette. And oysters! These are available as an add-on to your row and will be shucked fresh on-board by Kim\, served with several varieties of mignonette\, including a kelp version! \nThe Seaweed Row is offered on two dates only during Maine Seaweed Week: Friday\, April 21 and Saturday\, April 29. This row can be booked privately for pairs/couples or as a mixed group of two individuals. Children ages 10 and up are welcome (under 14 with adult supervision). Total on the water time is approximately 1.5 hours. $150 for individuals; $275 for two people (pairs/couples). And the oysters! On Seaweed Week’s official 3-hour Casco Bay cruise\, we’ll visit a kelp farm to see harvesting in action\, hear from Maine Sea Grant’s seaweed scientist Jaclyn Robidoux\, sample seaweed food and drink\, and more. Departing from Portland\, the tour is hosted by Heritage Seaweed owner and Seaweed Week founder Josh Rogers. We’ll be on the Fogg Casco Bay Cat\, which takes off from the Portland waterfront.
