SUMMARY:Seaweed ID Morning Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Seaweed ID In-the-Field: Morning Seaweed Walk\nThursday\, May 1\, 2025 @ 8:00 am – 9:30 am \nStart your day with some seaweed ID! Ever wondered how many species of seaweed grow in Maine? How they change with the seasons? Or which ones are edible? Join us for a hands-on species ID workshop and intertidal beach walk with Maine Sea Grant’s seaweed specialist\, Jaclyn Robidoux\, and get your questions answered. \nWe’ll explore the rocky shore near Two Lights State Park at and during low tide (8:32 am on 5/1)\, learning to identify native edible seaweeds and diving into their ecological roles\, seasonal rhythms\, and environmental benefits\, and at-home uses. We’ll also talk about Maine’s growing seaweed farming industry\, sustainable harvest practices\, and the big role this unique marine resource plays in the state’s coastal economy. \nWe’ll bring the field guides\, seaweed samples\, and snacks to take home—just bring your outdoor gear and questions! \nRegistration: $20. Children 10 and under are free—please note if they’ll be joining when you sign up so we can bring enough supplies. Space is limited. \nREGISTER HERE \nLOCATION: This workshop is being held at Dyer Cove in Cape Elizabeth\, near Two Lights State Park. SUMMARY:Digital Panel Discussion: West Coast Kelp Watchers
DESCRIPTION:What do the west coast Kelp watchers see off their shore? This digital panel features longtime wild harvesters and conservation-minded aquaculturists speaking from their own experience observing Pacific species\, particularly in the last years impacted by ocean heating events that have caused cascading impacts in the coastal kelp forests. Each will talk about her own lifeworld in seaweed\, observations about changes in the ocean\, reflections on the territoriality\, customary practices\, and regulatory structures that inform their harvest. They will bring up some of the misconceptions and 101 thinking that they bring to their work as educators and naturalists\, “docents to the wild world of seaweed” as well as some points that are relevant for those who wish to see more careful state regulation\, and where/ how to approach a life in seaweed learning. \nPanelists: \nAmanda Swinimer of Dakini Tidal Wilds has been harvesting seaweed in British Columbia for more than 20 years\, trained as a marine biologist\, she is the author of The Science and Spirit of Seaweed and The Science and Superpowers of Seaweed: A Guide for Kids. She is a primary author of Seaweed Commons white paper and a longtime participant in Slow Fish International. \nJulie Drucker (Yemaya Seaweed) has been wild harvesting along the Northern California for the past 20 years. \nVisit the event page for the link to connect to the virtual event!

SUMMARY:Seaweed ID Beach Walk
DESCRIPTION:TIME CHANGE!! NEW TIME IS 9:00-10:30 AM. \nThe Seaweed Week species ID beach walk is back for our 5th annual event! \nHow many species of seaweed are there in Maine? Do seaweeds change with the season? What even is seaweed? \nDive into these questions and more at this species-identification workshop and beach walk\, hosted by Maine Sea Grant’s seaweed specialist\, Jaclyn Robidoux. \nWe’ll explore the intertidal zone at low tide near Two Lights State Park and learn to identify edible seaweed species native to the Gulf of Maine. Discover the ecology and diversity of seaweeds\, while learning about the environmental benefits these species provide in coastal habitats. We’ll discuss sustainable harvest\, Maine’s growing seaweed farming industry\, and the role this versatile resource plays in Maine’s marine economy. Bring your seaweed questions and we’ll provide the field guides! \nRSVP here! \nIMPORTANT NOTE\nWe’ll be moving through slick and rocky terrain. Please wear proper foot gear (rubber boots/shoes with good traction that may get wet). It can be colder and more windy on the ocean. Dress accordingly for a few hours in the Maine outdoors. \nDIRECTIONS\nLocation: Dyer Cove\, Cape Elizabeth\, ME. Follow directions to Two Lights State Park in Cape Elizabeth\, ME. To get to Dyer Cove\, bear left at the fork right before the park entrance and follow to the public parking lot at the end of Two Lights Road (right near The Lobster Shack). Approximate address: 225 Two Lights Road\, Cape Elizabeth\, ME.

SUMMARY:Sun + Seaweed: Cyanotype Workshop with Oriana Poindexter
DESCRIPTION:Small Group Cyanotype Workshop led by Oriana Poindexter\, with local seaweed species ID presentation by Carissa Maurin\, Aquaculture Project Manager at Gulf of Maine Research Institute and seaweed provided by Nautical Farms. \nJoin artist and marine scientist Oriana Poindexter for an interactive art-science workshop to learn the cyanotype\, or sun-printing\, process. Learn this early alternative photographic process and use local seaweed species to create your own art prints using techniques first developed in the 1840s. Carissa Maurin\, Aquaculture Project Manager at the Gulf of Maine Research Institute\, will join us to share her expertise on the local seaweed species. \nThis workshop will teach you the fundamentals of the cyanotype process\, its history\, seaweed identification\, and will culminate with each participant creating their own original cyanotype prints – usually something frame worthy. \nThe first portion of the workshop will involve an introduction\, demonstration\, seaweed identification\, and selection of materials\, and the second portion will be a printing session. If you have materials you’d like to bring to use for printing (sentimental objects\, dried botanicals\, etc)\, please feel free to bring them. \nRegistration fee includes all materials and instruction\, along with light snacks and one drink from Après. If the fee is a hardship for you\, please contact Oriana at studio@orianapoindexter. \nAttendees must be 21+. SUMMARY:Friends from the Field Webinar: A Field Guide to the Seaweeds of Maine
DESCRIPTION:Join Blue Hill Heritage Trust and Island Heritage Trust for a Friends from the Field Webinar!\n\nGlen Mittelhauser (director of Maine Natural History Observatory)\, Jordan Chalfant (MNHO board member)\, and Dr. Amanda Savoie (researcher at the Canadian Museum of Nature) are writing a user-friendly photographic field guide to the seaweeds of Maine. The project has several components: creating a database of thousands of historic records of seaweed observations in an effort to create a complete species list for the state of Maine; doing field work to update inventories\, collect morphometric data\, and take thousands of photographs; and lab work for microscopy images and DNA sampling.\n\nJordan Chalfant is a naturalist who lives in Bar Harbor and studies seaweed. After spending 10 years working as a field biologist\, doing botanical inventories and seabird monitoring on the Coast of Maine\, she has taken on managing The Naturalist’s Notebook\, a nature and science bookstore in Seal Harbor\, as her day job.\n\nLearn more about this event here and use this link to register: https://us02web.zoom.us/…/reg…/WN_v0KHRIrJQQWKCfE1hKgzGA\n\n\nEmail landere@bluehillheritagetrust.org if you have any questions!
