SUMMARY:Seaweed ID In-the-Field: Afternoon Workshop
DESCRIPTION:The Seaweed Week species ID workshop is back for our 6th annual event!\nJoin us for this Sunday afternoon ID workshop where we’ll explore all things Maine seaweeds. \nHave you ever wondered… how many species of seaweed are there in Maine? Or if seaweeds change with the season? And\, what species are edible? We’ll dive into these questions and more at this species-identification workshop and beach walk\, hosted by Maine Sea Grant’s seaweed specialist\, Jaclyn Robidoux. \nWe’ll explore the intertidal zone at low tide (4:39PM on 4/21/24) near Two Lights State Park and learn to identify edible seaweed species native to the Gulf of Maine. Discover the ecology and diversity of seaweeds\, while learning about the environmental benefits these species provide in coastal habitats. We’ll discuss sustainable harvest\, Maine’s growing seaweed farming industry\, and the role this versatile resource plays in Maine’s marine economy. Bring your seaweed questions and we’ll provide the field guides\, seaweed samples\, and more. \nRegistration: $20\, children 10 and under free (please note if children will be joining in your registration so we have enough supplies\, thanks!) \n\n\nRegister Here! \n  \nLOCATION \nThis workshop is being held at Dyer Cove in Cape Elizabeth\, near Two Lights State Park. Parking is available in the lot next to Dyer Cove\, adjacent to the lot for The Lobster Shack at Two Lights. To map to Dyer Cove\, folks can use the address: 225 Two Lights Road\, Cape Elizabeth\, ME 04107. We’ll meet out on Dyer Cove beach. \nWEATHER NOTE \nThis workshop may require navigating some slick and/or rocky terrain. Attendees should have proper foot gear (rubber boots/shoes with good traction that may get wet) and know to dress accordingly for a few hours in the Maine outdoors\, especially as it can be colder and more windy on the ocean. We’ll host this workshop in a variety of Maine’s spring weather conditions\, but will notify participants if we need to cancel or reschedule in the case of extreme weather.
